Every year since 2005, Nickelodeon and its sister stations (Noggin, The N, Nicktoons Network, and Nick GAS) have participated in their “Worldwide Day of Play.” This year it is today, September 27, and for three hours, all of Nickelodeon’s stations will not have programming, but instead will display the logo above and a message to tell kids and their parents to go out and play. I think this is a great idea and a great way to tell kids to go get some exercise for a few hours instead of watching cartoons. But does this really work? Will kids really go out and play instead of watching Nick? There are countless more channels on cable and regular broadcast TV with cartoons that kids can just change the channel. All of these channels, like Nick and Disney Channel and Cartoon Network, need to work together to help promote healthy lifestyles and they should all have a special hour without programming to make kids want to play. I applaud Nickelodeon and their efforts, but I just think it needs to be broadened accross more networks.
David Blaine “Dive of Death” a Total Sham
September 25, 2008
Spoiler Alert!
I watched David Blaine’s special on ABC last night, “Dive of Death”, and let me tell you, it was a total disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, I love David Blaine’s street magic, but this endurance stunt was dumb, and a total waste of time.
After watching the two-hour special on ABC, I really expected the Dive of Death to be a death-defying stunt where he jumps off that 44-foot high ledge after hanging upside down for ALMOST 60 hours. Well, what he really did was bungie jump off the ledge, and then he just magically “disappeared.” According to the user who uploaded the YouTube video above, balloons were clearly visible above Blaine’s bungie cord, leading us to believe that his disappearance was anything but magical.
Last Night’s “D-List” Finale
August 15, 2008Last night I watched the season finale of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List and it almost made me cry. It was really tough for me to watch this episode only because of the different states that those brave soldiers were in. It was really tough for Kathy to be there, too; in one scene Kathy is out of sight of the recovering soldiers and she just breaks down and cries (at which point I almost cried because when I see someone cry it makes me want to cry). But what I really enjoyed about last night’s episode was that Kathy wanted to make the soldiers laugh, and lift their spirits up a little bit. Also, I saw how strong those soldiers were, not to mention how incredibly strong their families were. Though some soldiers were going through a really tough time of their life, I was surprised at how positive they were and how happy most of them were. It kind of made me think about all of the men and women fighting for our country, and how amazing these soldiers are.
I can’t wait until next season!
Wednesday Night Primetime
August 6, 2008Tonight, I watched some really good primetime television. First I watched Project Runway 5, episode 4, where the designers were challenged to create an outfit for American women athletes to wear at the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Some designers did really well with this, they took some inspiration from a museum and got to work right away. I thought that Blayne’s was actually pretty good this time, even though he really annoys me, mainly because he is obsessed with tanning which is kind of weird. I also thought that Joe was waaay too cocky because of his previous experience in sportswear, but his design, I thought, looked cheap and boring. I was really impressed by Terri and thought that Korto’s design was really, really nice. Oh, and Suede NEEDS TO STOP TALKING IN THIRD PERSON. Seriously, he needs to quit it. If you haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil it for you, because I’m nice like that.
After that, I stayed on Bravo and watched my second-favorite Bravo reality show, which is Shear Genius, season 2 episode 7. I thought that both the shortcut and the elimination challenges were the stupidest challenges by far. In the shortcut challenge, the stylists had to use only all-natural, “green” products that can be found in your pantry to style hair. I was like “WTF?” Yeah, they used things from corn syrup, to flour, to squids! It was nasty and crazy. I wonder how those girls got that gunk out of their hair, haha. Oh, and then the elimination challenge was totally crazy. Trying to cut human hair is tough enough, but now they were challenged to cut dog hair! Isn’t there another show for groomers on like Animal Planet or something? And not only did they have to groom the dogs, they also had to try and get inspiration from the dogs and cut and style the dog owner’s hair. In the words of Suede from PR, “wackadoodle!” And I, along with Dee, was very upset with who went home tonight. Oh well, at least Charlie is still in; he may be a bitch but he sure is good at what he does!
