Every year since 2005, Nickelodeon and its sister stations (Noggin, The N, Nicktoons Network, and Nick GAS) have participated in their “Worldwide Day of Play.” This year it is today, September 27, and for three hours, all of Nickelodeon’s stations will not have programming, but instead will display the logo above and a message to tell kids and their parents to go out and play. I think this is a great idea and a great way to tell kids to go get some exercise for a few hours instead of watching cartoons. But does this really work? Will kids really go out and play instead of watching Nick? There are countless more channels on cable and regular broadcast TV with cartoons that kids can just change the channel. All of these channels, like Nick and Disney Channel and Cartoon Network, need to work together to help promote healthy lifestyles and they should all have a special hour without programming to make kids want to play. I applaud Nickelodeon and their efforts, but I just think it needs to be broadened accross more networks.
David Blaine “Dive of Death” a Total Sham
September 25, 2008
Spoiler Alert!
I watched David Blaine’s special on ABC last night, “Dive of Death”, and let me tell you, it was a total disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, I love David Blaine’s street magic, but this endurance stunt was dumb, and a total waste of time.
After watching the two-hour special on ABC, I really expected the Dive of Death to be a death-defying stunt where he jumps off that 44-foot high ledge after hanging upside down for ALMOST 60 hours. Well, what he really did was bungie jump off the ledge, and then he just magically “disappeared.” According to the user who uploaded the YouTube video above, balloons were clearly visible above Blaine’s bungie cord, leading us to believe that his disappearance was anything but magical.
David Blaine’s New Stunt Criticized
September 24, 2008Magician David Blaine has been criticized, even heckled by a little kid, about his new endurance stunt where he will hang upisde down in New York’s Central Park for 60 hours. Why criticize this dangerous stunt, you ask? Well, becuase of his frequent breaks. One witness said “I arrived at 9am this morning to find him on the platform, and he stayed [standing upright] for 20 minutes.” Blaine apparently needs to take breaks to -cough- relieve himself, drink water, and get checked by his doctor.
So, he really isn’t hanging upside down for 60 hours, more like “ALMOST 60 hours.” As one other witness said “[It] is like being on a hunger strike for 22 hours a day… taking two hours off for lunch and dinner… and coffee and snacks.” (source)
Oh, and if you really want to know if this is a real endurance stunt or a cheap scam, you can catch David Blaine’s “Dive of Death” special on ABC tonight, Septmeber 24 at 9/8c. (I should get paid for these plugs!)
First Day of Fall
September 22, 2008Happy Autumn! Today was the very first day of Fall! Whooo! I love Fall for a couple of reasons: the weather starts to get cool but not too cold, Halloween, and Thanksgiving!
(I know, I know… this has been my first post in over a month, and my life has been a crazy adventure since my last post, and that’s pretty much why I haven’t posted anything, but I will try my best to update every day from now on!)
Let the Games Begin!
August 8, 2008Today (as in here in the US, becuase it’s already tomorrow in China) the Olympics have begun! Watch the opening ceremony tonight on NBC! Let’s hope the US take home most of the medals, even though the Hamm brothers had to drop out, and a boxer collapsed, the US can totally take the gold!
I’ll update after I watch the Opening Ceremony.
UPDATE: Watch videos, see pics, and read storeis on Olympic events for free online at www.NBCOlympics.com.
